Harry Callahan 『Retrospective』

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: "Of all the notable photographers of the twentieth century, surely Harry Callahan is the coolest." John Szarkowski, 2006 Harry Callahan (1912 – 1999) is regarded as one of the most innovative and influential 20th-century American photographers. By amplifying the abstract tendencies of New Vision in a lyrical mode evincing great sensitivity, he was able to overcome the prevailing realist aesthetic in American photography. Callahan was one of the few innovators of modern American photography noted as much for his work in color as for his work in black and white. The exhibition catalog presents Callahan’s multifaceted photographic œuvre, the product of tireless and prolific creative labors over the course of nearly sixty years. With nearly 200 works it shows the entire spectrum of Callahan’s production, including the rarely shown color works. Britta Strohschen 『Samba Brazil Love』
¥6,520
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: »With her photo project „Samba Brazil Love“ Britta Strohschen has immersed herself in the world of horse racing. The motivational crux of her photographic work is examining the fascinating relationship between human beings and animals, from tender attraction and symbiotic energy, to utter dependence and the efficient exercise of power. Her interest in the horse racing universe, with its highly complex interaction of myths, is not to tell a journalistic story or present a classical documentary. In the image flow of various aspects of the sport, from the stall to the winner’s cup, from fashionable women’s headwear and proud jockeys, from betting slips to borderline physical exertion, she has succeeded in piecing together a variegated visual sequence like a puzzle. The dramaturgy of the photographs displays neither a linear nor chronological ordering principle. Instead the layout encourages the viewer to succumb to a completely different rhythm. By changing pace constantly, snap-shots of concentration are juxtaposed to the dynamic of human beings and horses at the boundaries of the action. The photography is in a position to lend the objects in the pictures their own language. With a fragmentary glimpse divorced from any causal relationships, they develop a very strong aesthetic presence. Matthew Arnold 『Topography is Fate』(お取り寄せ)
¥8,970
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Matthew Arnold spent months in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya to photograph these unfamiliar North African landscapes upon which many crucial battles in the North African Campaign (June 1940 to May 1943) were fought. The sites were found utilizing old battle maps to follow the paths that the Allied military units used. Arnold has documented the battlefields as they currently stand in a personal style of landscape photography: impressionistic muted horizons of desert, coastal seascape and grassland, incorporating bunkers, trenches and physical artifacts of the conflict that remain as part of the environment.Unexploded shells, barbed wire and mines still litter the landscapes of North Africa and occasionally claim yet another victim, as if the very land itself is reminding us of the tragedy of war. May 2013 is the 70th anniversary of the end of the North African Campaign. Matthew Arnold (b. 1972) is a photographer living in New York City. After college he taught offset lithography and digital imaging as an adjunct professor at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It is said that a photograph can stop time. With the help of a camera, a slice of time can be preserved on a light sensitive surface. To arrest the elusive nature of light, was the intent of young Finnish artist Maija Annikki Savolainen. "When the Sense of Belonging is Bound to a System of Movement" tells a story of a ten day travel that she did in order to reinterpret the mechanical aspect of photography. Maija Annikki Savolainen defines the book being a travel diary of a road trip through time. The book presents a lucid concept and a compact project, combining factual research of light as hand drawn diagrams with »down to earth« photography. The photography itself, the travel documentation of various places and people, are observations and notions and are presented in the book as film strips. Nancy Baron 『THE GOOD LIFE, Palm Springs』
¥7,480
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: In The Good Life – Palm Springs, American photographer Nancy Baron offers a lush insider’s look at the resort town of Palm Springs, California. After years of visiting Palm Springs as a tourist, Baron became a parttime resident of this desert town and discovered that it was both everything and nothing like she expected it to be. The idea of Palm Springs evokes a well-defined image internationally. These varied definitions are mostly accurate, and yet this oasis of layered Americana is often misunderstood. A few steps from the resorts and off the main drag, there is a jewel of a small town, with something for everyone – and a sure path to the American dream. Baron’s images, saturated by the bright desert sun, show us what she sees in this welcoming town that continually reinvents itself with hope, determination, and the belief that everyone is entitled to »The Good Life.« Nancy Baron is a fine art documentary photographer living in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, California. Baron states, »I document the world around me, aiming to capture the majesty of worlds that could easily be overlooked, seen as mundane, or otherwise misunderstood.« Nancy Sinatra ■刊 行: 2014年 ■仕 様: ハードカバー ■判 型: 297 × 240 mm ■ページ数: 96ページ ■図 版数: 51点(カラー) ■言 語: 英語 ■ISBN : 978-3-86828-482-9 :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Authors: Aline Smithson, Donald Wexler, Nancy Baron Artists: Nancy Baron Designed by Kehrer Design Hardcover 297 x 240 mm 96 pages 51 color ills. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Shortly before his conversion uses Anja Schlamann (1967) in her photo series Encanto the entire opera house in Cologne as a unique architectural stage. Fragmentary it displays both representative areas as well as the public hidden rooms behind the stage, let the laconic and full details see traces of a 60-year-old theater life. The sober look at the space obtained by the surprisingly recurring presence of the character Carmen a momentary level. It shows fluently and transparent, full of emotional richness and magic. About this theatrical role played the viewer's gaze is directed into the soul of rooms: Carmen as a player, sorceress, Ambassador and mediator between the worlds. It's like a staging off stage, in which the art world opera unfolds in a hitherto unheard of, soundless original state, as they tell their own story. The photographer is director and actress in a person. She uses the reciprocal match to the view between audience and actor. The wonderfully mysterious appearance at the Opera House is modeled into an independent image. ■出 版: Rolf Sachsse ■刊 行: 2014年 ■仕 様: ハードカバー ■判 型: 240 × 195 mm ■ページ数: 80ページ ■図 版数: 36点(カラー) ■言 語: ドイツ語 / 英語 ■ISBN : 978-3-86828-489-8 :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Publisher: Rolf Sachsse Authors: Gunter Geltinger, Rolf Sachsse Artist: Anja Schlamann Designed by Kehrer Design Heidelberg; Bartel Design Cologne Hardcover 240 × 195 mm 80 pages 36 color illustrations. Ishiuchi Miyako 『Hasselblad Award 2014』
¥9,331
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Japanese photographer Miyako Ishiuchi, one of the most respected and compelling photographers of her generation, is the 34rd recipient of the prestigious Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. This publication celebrates her artistic achievements with a thorough presentation of the main themes in her work: remembrance, fabric, and the body. A significant feature in her work is the meaning and treatment of surface, whether the human skin, the materiality of an object, or personal clothing. Through close attention to surfaces – as traces, mediations, and symbols – Ishiuchi tackles head-on the poetics and politics of history, as for instance women’s life in post-war Japan or the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The book includes works from Ishiuchi’s major series 1947, Scars, Mother’s, Hiroshima, Silken Dreams, and Frida by Ishiuchi. Two new essays by Christopher Phillips and Lena Fritsch offer in-depth analysis of her art. ■仕 様: ハードカバー ■刊 行: 2014年 ■判 型: 240 × 320 mm ■ページ数: 152ページ ■図 版数: 70点 ■言 語: 英語 ■ISBN : 978-3-86828-518-5 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Editor: Dragana Vujanovic, Louise Wolthers Authors: Christopher Phillips, Lena Fritsch Artists: Miyako Ishiuchi Designed by Kehrer Design Half-cloth hardcover 240 × 320 mm 152 pages 70 color and duotone ills. H. Kiiski & N.Vatanen 『Archive Play』(お取り寄せ)
¥3,720
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: This book is a playful, tentative and imaginative exploration into the photographic archive as generator of multiple meanings and plentiful source of inspiration. The bodies of work, Present (Thank You Helvi Ahonen) by Hertta Kiiski and Archival Studies / A Portrait of an Invisible Woman by Niina Vatanen, were created as a response to the Helvi Ahonen collection, housed at the Finnish Museum of Photography. The 5,000 negatives that make up the original collection tell a touching story about the amateur photographer Helvi Ahonen’s life, with all its joys and sorrows. Archive Play is a joint effort between the curator Mirjami Schuppert and the artists Hertta Kiiski and Niina Vatanen. While it is a culmination of an intensive research and collaboration project, the documentation of the exhibition Glimpses of the Unattainable (Finnish Museum of Photography, Helsinki, spring 2014), it also is an independent work on its own. To accompany the photographs, a further interpretative layer is created by a fictional story written by Monika Fagerholm, an esteemed Finnish author. ■仕 様: ハードカバー ■判 型: 170 × 225 mm ■ページ数: 80ページ ■図 版数: 31点 ■言 語: 英語 ■ISBN : 978-3-86828-477-5 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Hertta Kiiski , Niina Vatanen ARCHIVE PLAY Hardcover 170 × 225 mm 80 pages and 31 photos English Available ISBN 978-3-86828-477-5

Christoph Bangert 『WAR PORN』
¥5,591
SOLD OUT
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Do I exploit my subjects? Is it morally justifiable to work as a photographer in war zones and disaster areas? Why are we all so attracted to images of other people’s misery? Am I producing »War Porn«? As a photographer covering conflicts and natural disasters for international publications, Christoph Bangert (b. 1978) is regularly confronted with a dilemma: On the one hand he tries to document events as truthful to his own experience as possible but on the other hand he needs to accommodate several layers of self-censorship. The first layer of selfcensorship is located inside of his own brain. Bangert has no recollection at all of taking some of the pictures seen in the book. Designed by Teun van der Heijden, Chiho Bangert and Klaus Kehrer, the book is also a collector's item: The small format, open spine binding, rough cover material and typewriter font are reminiscent of a handmade, personal journal. Some of the pages are not cut apart, but have a perforation which can easily be ripped open. This way the reader can decide just how much he wants to see, how much he can take. Spreads between these "hidden" images, naturally, are open to view. ■仕 様: ハードカバー ■刊 行: 2014 ■判 型: 120 × 160 mm ■ページ数: 192ページ ■図 版数: 98点(カラー) ■言 語: 英語 ■ISBN : 978-3-86828-497-3 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Authors: Christoph Bangert Artists: Christoph Bangert Designed by Teun van der Heijden, Chiho Bangert, Klaus Kehrer Hardcover 120 × 160 mm 192 pages 98 color ills.
